24th of OCTOBER – HAND IN

Our first character design and turnaround.

For this first project we were asked to think about and develop a new character starting from a reference picture of a door.

Reference image provided in class.

It was supposed to be something that could think and their ability to think should have been conveyed by the design itself.

Since the door made me think about a medieval – kind of gothic design, I started thinking about a humanoid creature, maybe forgotten there, maybe there was a tomb or some kind of statue/relic behind the door. I first gathered some reference images of medieval knights and skeletons.

After this I decided I had to work first on some quick sketches to try and find some rough shapes of both the head and the general silhouette/ structure of the body.

During this phase I started to realise I wanted to move towards a more cartoonish kind of style, something that could be a bit more vibrant , I didn’t want to follow realism as it seemed to be I would be too constricted with the lines. Absolute realism could have been an issue in trying and give some expressions to the character being it made of bones . I wanted to be able to move it easily.

Having seen some things that were appealing and in tune with what I had in mind , I decided to explore more the head shapes and body structures separately .

At the end of the process , I decided to continue developing these shapes since they were expressing in my opinion a clumsy, goofy but also grounded character.

Adding some details was very fun and I had a good set of references to do it.

Here are the final drawings for my character behind the door:
