Environment 1 : Castle Frankenstein.

Characteristics I am looking for: immense, domineering architecture with vast spaces and very tall structures that impose order through scale, while still conveying an imposing presence marked by organized chaos and arrogance.

ELEMENTS AND REFERENCES FOR THE CASTLE:

I’ve collected images from and researched architects and designers that have dealt with scale and openness as a stylistic choice (Louis Kahn, Le Corbusier, Paul Rudolph, Kenzo Tange), but I also felt that since the movie is dealing with control and power i researched also architects from the Nazi and Fascist regimes like Albert Speer.

I started with some exploration of the research. I am looking for an immense structure with vast spaces and very tall, imposing buildings. I feel scale is very important to convey an imposing presence and order, although in this case it can be organised chaos and arrogance compatible to Dr. Frankestein’s Character.

I started exploring a couple of ideas. I think a 3 point perspective from below is the way to go to convey the aspect of dominnering structure I am looking for.

I have limited myself to 3 options : the first one on the top right hand side has been immediately thrown out as ” too empty and also it would have been a bit unusual with a 3 point perspective” .

The remaining 2 were developed, and in the end I chose the second one for both scales, perspective and also for the organised chaos feeling of multiple towers and buildings of different sizes next to each other.

I wanted the castle to be encased in a natural environment

Adding the Values: I wanted the castles to emerge from the rocky environment it is encased in. I kept three main values and I added some shades, keeping the shades inside the respective value group.

I chose a palette of natural, sandy tones so the buildings feel like a subtle distortion of the rocky habitat rather than something entirely separate from it.
